Artist Bio:

David Mitchell is an active percussion educator, performer, and adjudicator. Currently he is the assistant director of the Southeastern University drumline, the Fireline. Mitchell also teaches applied lessons, percussion ensemble, and music theory as an assistant to Brian Blume. Previously, he taught at East Tennessee State University. Mitchell was a percussion instructor at Science Hill High School for seven years, and was featured as a soloist at their second PASIC Showcase Concert in 2016. As a member of PAS, Mitchell is on the Percussion Ensemble Committee. He often presents clinics at other schools in the region, and is an adjudicator for marching band competitions. He was formerly a principal percussionist for the Johnson City Symphony Orchestra.

Contributing to the art of percussion through the commission of new compositions is one of David’s passions. Examples of these contributions include Spur by Ivan Trevino and Distances by Baljinder Sekhon. He led a consortium to commission a new solo work by Dave Maric written for marimba, vibraphone, unpitched percussion, and audio track, which was premiered in March 2017.

Mitchell is a doctoral candidate under Dr. Eric Willie at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He received a Bachelor of Music at East Tennessee State University where he studied with Dr. Rande Sanderbeck, and a Master of Music at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro where he studied with Dr. Kristopher Keeton.
